10 Tips to Boost Your CNA Exam Score
By M. Dodd

1. If you use it clean it and put it away correctly. Know what item goes in what drawer. Know the proper way to clean the things that you are using.

2. Use a paper towel or a regular towel to protect your surfaces. This is an infection control practice. It protects both you and the patient.

3. Ask your patient how he feels today. Promoting comfort is a big part of the role of the nursing assistant. Do this in the beginning of each procedure.

4. Make sure you and your patient have on non skid shoes. This promotes safety and prevents falls.

5. If you're working with the patient on the bed make sure it is at your working height. This is safety and proper body mechanics. It will help you to protect your back from injury.

6. Make sure the patient is safe. This alone is important not just on your test but makes you a valuable asset in your facility.

7. Always cover for privacy. Patients already have less privacy than they would outside the facility. Help them to have the most possible while in the facility.

8. Ensure nothing that covers the patient (clothes, gait belt, sheets on the bed) is too tight. It's important not to restrain them and to maintain skin integrity.

9. Move the patient slowly and gently throughout all procedures. This protects their skin as well among other things.

10. Bed down, side rails up, call bell in reach. If you always do this when you're done, you know you'll get great scores in safety.
