How to Become a Nebraska Medication Aide

To become a Medication Aide in Nebraska you must meet certain requirements.  Medication aides

  • only give routine medications to another person.
  • give medications based on the Five Rights – right person, right drug, right amount, right time, and right route.
  • chart medication(s) given on person's record.
  • work under the direction and oversight of a competent individual, caretaker, or licensed healthcare professional.

What are the Qualifications to become a Medication Aide in Nebraska

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Successfully demonstrated 10 competencies and the basic routes
  • Be of good moral character

Nebraska Medication aide has two levels.

Medication Aide 40 hour can work in any setting.  They must

  • pass a Medication Aide course of 40 hours in length
  • Must pass a state exam and
  • Knowledgeable of the 10 competencies and the basic routes.

With the 40 hour course and exam, Nebraska Medication Aides who provide medications in a nursing home, an intermediate care facility for the developmentally disabled, or an assisted living facility must pass Medication Aide Course lasting 40 hours and a state approved examination that tests minimum competency for medication provision. Passing score is 72% or greater.

Medication Aide – can work in settings other than nursing homes, assisted living facilities and intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled. Knowledgeable of the 10 competencies and the basic routes.

Lapsed Nebraska Medication Aide Certification

If you are a lapsed Medication Aide you will need to complete the following:

  • Reapplication
  • Pay an $18.00 registration fee.

Medication Aide 40-Hour from another state

  • Successful completion of the Nebraska 40-hour Medication Aide examination conducted by a Nebraska approved testing center.
  • Completed Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations.
  • Completed Documentation of Course Completion (this can be a certificate from your course provider with the number of hours listed).
  • Non-refundable fee of $18.00

Nursing Student - to meet the requirements for registration as a Medication Aide 40-hour:

  • Successful completion of the 40-hour Medication Aide examination conducted by a Nebraska approved testing center.
  • Completed Initial Application. The competency standards can be found in the Medication Aide Regulations.
  • Completion of nursing courses equivalent to MA 40-hour course. Instructor of course(s) must sign this portion of the application form.
  • Non-refundable fee of $18.00
